On Supply: 'Ready to Burn' vs. 'Seasoned'
Every year we bring in more and more 'seasoned' split firewood, seasoned is cut in early Winter/Spring and Summer and lain up until it reaches less than 20% moisture content (usually well below 11%). When that runs out, we next offer 'ready to burn' wood (below 20% moisture on receipt to lot). We also have ready to burn on the lot, year round.
Many of you ask for 'seasoned' wood when it's already cold and we're already, likely, long out, generally our 'ready to burn' serves folks well. But we have gotten a few complaints and done our best to address them, usually it’s just a matter of technique to start your fires.
We need you to help us expand our stockpile. Your rack should be replenished at the end of winter to insure that you have wood for the fall that is ready to burn on your terms. We encourage you to plan ahead when possible.
Our minimum requirement on receiving split wood, is that wood averages 20% or below on delivery to our yard. Rain, Snow and ambient moisture can change that temporarily. Rain actually speeds up the aging process, once it dries up.
Some measured on our yard, immediately post rains is around 30%, wood that was 7-11% a week prior, but these changes can be ameliorated by bringing inside a day or so and using a good kindling fire and making sure your chimney is primed and well-ventilated. Any wood will burn, but drier wood is easier to catch.
Our desire is to focus on restorative and/or considered firewood production and forestry management, mostly utilizing fallen or storm downed trees. One of our suppliers is working a 400-1000 acre span of tornado downed trees, that will likely last the next 5 years. Another, is called in by his area neighbors and ranchers to perform a similar duty.
If you encounter issues, we can often help and encourage you to reach out in reply over email or dropping us a voicemail. Texts get lost, between the hundreds we field every day. But we'll get back to you as soon as we can and would rather lose money and make sure you have wood that will work for you, than lose you as a customer.
We grow our supply and customer relationships organically, but based on these ideals, we do sometimes supplement with other sources out of necessity to meet your demands, New Mexico Piñon being an example, but it is a marginal aspect of our business.
